Counselling Services
Counselling services are an important element within the overall range of student support services provided to Carnegie Mellon University scholars. Counsellors can assist by discussing possible solutions to problems that may be of an academic or personal nature. Communication between counsellors and students remains strictly confidential.
All Carnegie Mellon University students (full and part-time) are able to access counselling services via arrangements in place between the university and off-campus providers. Students may directly contact either of the following two providers - initial contact with university staff is not required:

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will the counsellor provide the university with details of the content of a counselling session?
No. The content of any counselling session is strictly confidential. Details remain solely with the student and counsellor.
Q: Do I need to pay for this service?
In the first instance students are entitled to three counselling sessions at no cost to the student. Any subsequent sessions will be assessed on an individual basis taking into account advice from the counsellor. In general, any subsequent sessions will be paid for by the student.
Q: Do I need to contact a CMU staff member before making an appointment with a counsellor?
No. Students may liaise directly with the counsellor. If however a student first wishes to speak with a member of staff, this is fine. Correspondence should be directed to the Director of Programs or the Graduate Program Coordinator.
Q: Should I advise CMU of engagement with a counsellor?
The university will be aware of engagement following invoicing from a counsellor. However, the nature of the engagement is a matter of strict confidence between the student and counsellor. Invoices from counsellors may not be received for some time after the student has engaged the counsellor. Students should therefore consider the value in consulting with university staff (Director of Programs or Graduate Program Coordinator) as there may be related implications for the student’s study program. For example, staff will be in a better position to support students and to liaise with faculty to ensure the appropriate academic management of the matter.
