Bicycle Storage, Riding and Cycling in Adelaide

POLICY FOR STUDENTS OF AUSTRALIAN CAMPUS

Students of Carnegie Mellon University Australia who own and ride their own bicycle (bike) are welcome to ride to the campus.

At present the only location that bike scan stored is in the central courtyard or on the bike racks outside the front of the Torrens building on Victoria Square.

Please note that bikes are not to be wheeled in through the front of the building or chained to the rails at the front entrance of the building.

Students are highly advised to purchase a secure lock for their street-legal bikes and it is required by law for people to ride with a helmet.

A bike storage area will be considered should a majority of students wish to cycle into the University

CYCLING IN ADELAIDE

Adelaide is a great city for cyclists. You can cycle from the coast to the hills along Linear Park and the River Torrens, passing straight through the centre of Adelaide without ever venturing onto a road.

As the University is located on the corner of Wakefield Street and Victoria Square you will no doubt find yourself riding in traffic. Cycling next to trucks, buses, trams and cars can be dangerous. It's crucial to stay alert and be very aware of everyone else around you.

There are a series of bike routes in and beyond the city. Cycling maps can be found at:

THEFT

Bikes can be a major theft target item. To protect your mode of transport and reduce the likelihood of its theft, use the following guidelines:

Use a D lock or other high end security device designed for securing bicycles.

Lock both wheels and the frame to a rack.

Do not leave bicycles out overnight or on weekends.

Lock bicycles in a well lit, well travelled area.

If students have a late class consider using a storage facility rather than the street racks.

Remove all accessories such as helmet, light, pump, drink bottle and personal effects.

Keep a copy of the bicycles serial number to aid the identification and recovery in the event of theft.

Carnegie Mellon advises that whilst any bicycle is on campus neither the University nor any of its' authorised persons are liable for any theft, loss or damage to any bicycle and/or accessories.
